The new anthem, to be sung by the National Anthem Choir at all sporting events, will state 'We stand for freedom,' which many people have argued is offensive. Others who feel the song should remain in the room have said that this verse is part of a lesson.The first National Anthem was written in 1892 after an incident in a baseball game in which a team member (African American) threw a shoe at a white player and then attacked him in the stands. The incident was considered to be the first instance of racism in American history, and a short time later the National Anthem was written and became known as the Star Spangled Banner.The scene in the previous national anthem has been compared to the one in the Olympics, when an African American swimmer was pulled off of the platform by two white swimmers who said that he could not be an American. Several other athletes were removed from the pool for questioning the conduct of the two. One of the protests was to play a different version of the national anthem at the Olympics. The national anthem was not changed but the winning athlete played a different version, 'God Bless America.'As a result of these incidents and others that followed such as the burning of the flag by men and women who claimed to be representing the United States, many people protest the National Anthem. They argue that this is an offensive sentence, which portrays the United States as one nation in the way that it has historically been. One commentator said that the song is too offensive for children to hear. He stated that it was unacceptable for any child to hear such language.However, there is another side to the national anthem debate. There are those who argue that the debate about the performance of the anthem is misguided and that the original version was not offensive. In fact, a gro up of scholars and singers organized a campaign to have the anthem changed and they have succeeded to get the school board to conduct a review of the composition.Many younger people are concerned about how this song may affect their self-esteem and confidence. They see themselves as role models in their schools, in their communities and in their society. Many more feel that the use of the words 'In God We Trust' has discouraged them from practicing their religion. Some feel that the words 'E Pluribus Unum' has often been misinterpreted to mean unity, while some feel that they need to be understood in their original context, which means 'Out of many, one.'There is no argument about the issue, but there is one group of people who are more concerned about it than the others. For the most part, other people are concerned about changing the lyrics to the National Anthem because they want it to become less offensive to children and others. However, there are those who are opposed to chang ing the lyrics to the National Anthem and feel that the words 'God Bless America'The Star Spangled Banner' are fitting for a school to sing to students.
